Shadow Between the Walls

I lived in a city where the sun never rose, tall walls, strict rules and silence. Those who disappeared were forgotten. My brother Ian vanished a month ago and everyone acted like he never existed. Even my mother when I asked her looked at me coldly and said, Ian, I don't know anyone by that name.

Since that night I started hearing things in the dark. footsteps with no body, whispers behind the walls, and a shadow in the mirror. But it vanished every time I turned around. I knew something was wrong. But in our city, asking questions was a crime. Curiosity was punished by exile to the rehabilitation center. No one ever came back.

One day, while organizing the school library, I found an old book hidden behind a dusty shelf. Its pages were partly burned, but inside was a map. A map of the eastern wall, and a place called the Black Room. At the bottom of the page, written in shaky handwriting, whoever faces the shadow, frees the city. I decided to go.

That night, I snuck out of my house, walked through narrow alleys, avoiding the guards. I reached the eastern wall and found a small gate behind a rusted panel. The air inside the room was heavy, like breathing the memories of those who had vanished. Inside, the darkness felt alive.

The shadow appeared, in Ian's form. But his eyes were empty, and his voice wasn't his. He said, Why did you come? No one returns from here, I stood still, heart pounding, and said, I didn't come to bring you back. I came to bring back the truth.

The shadow wrapped around me, trying to choke me with fear. Images from the past, pain, screams, everything tried to break me. But I remembered one thing, a phrase Ian told me before he disappeared. If I vanish, don't believe the walls. Believe your heart, I screamed. I'm not afraid! I remember...

The shadow cracked. Light burst into the room. The walls trembled. The whole city began to breathe again. People stepped out of their homes, as if waking from a long dream.

And Ian... came back. Not alone, everyone who had vanished returned. I stood in the center of the city and everyone looked at me. I said clearly, Those who face their fear, set themselves free.
